Member States came together at the high level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York September 19-20, 2011 to address the growing problems associated to non-communicable disease. The draft political declaration was adopted as proposed.

Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases: Report of the Secretary-General

This report from the UN secretary general outlines the major causes and impacts of NCDs globally. The UNSG offers five 'recommendations for progress' to help prevent NCDs including; 1) a whole of government approach, 2) sustained primary healthcare measures, 3) strengthening the capacity of member states to monitor NCDs 4) Use lessons learned from fighting tuberculosis and malaria, 5) prioritizing NCDs in the highest levels of government.
